India usually manufactures a huge variety of Tiles . These types mainly differ in quality rather than sizes and shapes . Different types of tiles have different usability depending on the areas of installation as in wall , floor , outside , inside , high foot fall areas , low foot fall areas , swimming pool etc. Being in the business of selling and importing Tiles i know what types are mostly used . So in this article i have highlighted 7 different types of Tiles manufactured in India .
1. Ceramic Tiles –
Ceramic Tiles are made of clay and sand . They are the highest exported tile type due to their usability and affordability . These tiles are highly adaptable and can be used for walls and floors both .

- Not strong enough for outdoors .
- Absorbs high amount of water.
2. Porcelain Tiles –
Porcelain Tiles are made from denser clay material and are treated at a lot higher temperatures than ceramic tiles. They are similar to ceramic tiles, but are far more stronger, harder , water resistant and can be used outdoors without any worry .
Pros –
- Appropriate for high foot fall / traffic regions .
- Strong , hard and water resistant.
- Need less maintenance.
Cons –
- Costlier than ceramic tiles .
- Difficult to cut due to hardness.
- Tough installation.
3. Vitrified Tiles –
Vitrified tiles are non porous and water resistant type of ceramic tiles made by hydraulic pressing of a mixture of clay, silica, quartz, and feldspar. The patterns on vitrified tiles are printed digitally . One can create a variety of patterns and styles on the tile, including imitations of materials like wood, bamboo, marble, and more.
Pros –
- More options in designs , styles and patterns .
- Strong and highly water resistant .
- Easy installation and maintenance.
Cons –
- Slippery surface.
- One of the most expensive tiles.
- Costly installation.
4. Stone Tiles –
Stone Tile is a style of tile that’s cut directly from stone blocks . Stone tiles are made from various mountain-born minerals, usually marble, granite, travertine, limestone, and sandstone.
Pros –
- Highly strong as made up of natural stones .
- Very unique designs and texture.
Cons –
- Very expensive tile style .
- Gets easily scratched.
5. Wooden Tiles –
Wooden Tiles are of two types . One is Solid Wood Tile which is made up of as the name suggests solid wood and second is wood-like tile . Usually now a days people are inclining more towards ” wood – like ” tile because they are more environment friendly and quite affordable in comparison to solid wood tiles.
Pros –
- Less harmful to environment .
- Rich looks.
Cons –
- Tough to install.
- Restoration is required.
6. Cement Tiles –
Cement Tiles are one of the most historic tiles present in the market . They lost their glory when heavy machinery and high technology started producing ceramic and porcelain tiles . But now again people are going back to old days and installing cement tiles in their parking or garden area to give that rustic look.

- Very strong and durable .
- Easily replaceable
- Very affordable.
- Easy installation.
Cons –
- Limited designs.
- Rustic look meant for few selected places.
7. Mosaic Tiles –
Mosaic Tiles also known as “decorative tiles ” are made of small tiles of same color or different colors tied together on a mesh of a standard tile size . They are mostly used in shower , kitchen and other places where decoration is required like behind a TV or a bar area.
Pros –
- Vibrant colors which looks beautiful.
- Offers uniqueness.
- Easy to install and clean .
Cons –
- A little expensive.
How to choose your type of tile ?
Choice of flooring is very very important while building your dream home , office , hotel or any other property . Not one tile is suitable for all the places , the selection of tiles should depend on the foot fall of a particular region . For better understanding i am giving few examples of usability of these 7 different types of tiles manufactured in India .
- Ceramic Tile are suitable for bedrooms or even the whole house .
- Rough Porcelain Tiles can be used in bathrooms as they are more water resistant.
- Double charged Vitrified Tiles can be used in malls , hospitals and offices.
- Stone tiles can be used in patio or gazebo .
- Wooden Tiles can be used in bedrooms or in hotel rooms.
- Cement Tiles are mostly used in garages for car parking.
- Mosaic tiles can be used on walls in bath area as they are water proof , or for any decorative purpose on the wall .
